I feel pretty lucky to say.. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has become part of my landscape and new life living in Europe. 20KM south of Avignon, and surrounded by the olive groves and green valleys of the Alpilles, St. Remy is the perfect representation of, and place to experience, life in Provence.
Made famous around the world by fellow-Aussie, Vicki Archer, and her books, My French Life and French Essence, you too can live her French Life by staying in her recently restored town house, Le Petit Bijou. (If Vicki sounds familiar.. go and ask your Mum, she is sure to have copies of the books around the house.. my Mum does!)
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is the typical French village – quaint, picturesque, romantic and charming.
Le Petit Bijou – there really is no other way to have a complete French experience! I also love that you can feel as if you are living in the town, even just for a few days.
Eygalières – visit the markets on a Saturday. Espadrilles en masse, woven baskets, lavender scented soaps, hats and more. Oh, did I mention the fresh produce…?!
The St-Paul-de-Mausole clinic, where Van Gogh was treated for mental illness. It is situated in a monastery, one kilometre south of town.
Try to plan your trip around a Wednesday, which is market day in St. Remy. The markets are gloriously full and the town comes alive with all the visitors. We always go in early to buy the freshest olives, tapenades, flowers and bread.
Local: La Cantina – my favourite local eatery and the very best Italian in town. The pizzas are great for the boys and I love the antipasto plate.
Dinner with friends: Le Chateau des Alpilles – they had me the moment I entered down the tree lined driveway… Tres Romantique!
Special Occasion: Beaumaniere for some of the best service you’ll ever experience – champagne time!
In the Summer, sit amongst the garden: La Chassagnette – requires a designated driver but it is well worth it, particularly if you are with a big group of friends.
Asian: Restaurant Le Konoba – only if you are dying for something different, having been travelling through France for weeks!
1 Michelin Starred Experience: La Maison Jaune
