I’m one of those lazy exercise freaks who needs a class or a trainer, or at the very least a friend in the gym who knows what they’re doing, in order to train. You’re rarely going to see me going for a run – boring – but I’ll absolutely hammer myself in a class – weird. Anyhoo, last year I ramped up my exercise HARD and was training daily, if not twice. I learnt that’s probs a bit psycho for me so now I’m training 3-5x per week and it works perfectly around my crazy work schedule.
When I first arrived in London the gym/health scene was pretty lacklustre but over the past 6/7 years, it’s exploded. Not only are there now plenty of options for classes and healthy salads on the fly but it’s semi acceptable now to wear athleisure in the streets… much to my Sydney girl relief (lol, but also yes-town to comfort).
I use class pass but also book directly with studios. I’ve outlined some of the best IMO, below. My favourite gym is E by Equinox and White City House so if you are visiting and have a Soho House membership, it’s worth popping in for the gym, pool, steam and sauna. Ok, off to spin now, bye. xHermione.
Soul Cycle [Spin]
America’s go to spin class (/ religion) has arrived in London and conveniently, on my doorstep on Portobello Road. I prefer classes with Mantas and if you’re keen, you can join me for a double.
One of the best spin instructors in London is Nat C who rides at Mortimer Street and Westbourne Grove. These classes will seriously test you but you never regret a class. Psycle also offers barre, yoga etc.
E by Equinox St James’s [PT/Training]
E by Equinox is the brand’s luxury offering and WOW, it delivers. If you’re looking for a gym that offers everything from PT to a Dry Cleaning Concierge, this is your answer. Particularly good if you work in Mayfair.
Vita Boutique Fitness [Pilates]
I have fallen in love with Pilates again and Vita is my studio of choice. It’s contemporary pilates so it really works the muscles with a fast moving, high energy but low impact movement that is highly addictive (!)
Last year I fell in love with boxing. I take the Sweatbox and Boxing Skills classes and my favourite trainer’s are Yaz and Tanya. I go with my workout partner Silje and it’s SUCH a good stress relief, kicking ass, literally.
Angus Warburton [Personal Training]
Angus is a young, passionate and dedicated PT who understands the body and has a zero BS policy to training, diet and his clients weight loss and fitness goals. I highly recommend booking in with him because, if for nothing else, it’s really FUN!
