Alyce Tran is a powerhouse businesswoman who lights the way as a creative force and unbelievable multitasker.
She works harder and faster than anyone I know and it has been my absolute pleasure to work with her to bring The Daily Edited into the UK market.
The brand was, as expected, insanely well received in London and I can now proudly say I see it being worn all over town. I asked Alyce some questions that I felt might inspire you, as she has me.
1. Explain your business / what you do – in your words.
I am co-founder and creative director of an accessories brand (The Daily Edited), homewares brand (In the Roundhouse) and a new skincare line (James Vivian Glow) so effectively what I do on a day to day basis is run and create things for all of these brands. Every day is different and presents new challenges to me no matter what, even if I have the “day off”.
2. Who inspires you?
Ooohhh I love the scale that Jo Horgan has been able to achieve with Mecca Cosmetica and I admire Jen Atkin – taking her skills into successful product.
3. Biggest career lesson to date?
Ensure you are on the same page as your business partners from day 1 and document it.
4. How did this journey start for you?
It all started with TDE, which was a hobby that I did to keep lawyer life interesting (I was previously a lawyer). The brand subsequently took off and here we are.
5. Advice to someone wanting to start their own business?
Just go for it, don’t keep asking for advice as it can stump you and slow you down, go with your gut feel.
“Just go for it, don’t keep asking for advice as it can stump you and slow you down, go with your gut feel.”
6. Quote you live by?
Don’t have one – give me a few!
7. Sacrifices you’ve made to get where you are?
Some friendships and familial relationships, I just don’t have as much bandwidth to give as I did in the past, the old me used to make hand made gifts and be really patient, the new me is asking my EA to help me select gifts and bandaging situations with gifts – terrible to admit!
8. Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Be careful before you make irreversible decisions.
“Be careful before you make irreversible decisions.”
9. What’s next for you?
Trying to extract myself from the everyday running of a business and working more strategically with my time!
