Phoebe Greenacre is a fellow Aussie in London, and the similarities don’t stop there! We both have multiple businesses and passions and often commiserate over our daily decision to potentially, well, take on too much! Amongst other feathers in her cap, Phoebe is the CEO of luxury athleisure brand Silou, a brand so beautiful and so well executed, it is truly my honour and pleasure to have the chance to consult on the business. Dive into the world of Silou, and Phoebe, here!
1. Explain Silou and what you do, in your words.
I’m the Co Founder + CEO of Silou – Silou is a luxury activewear brand specialising in clothes that feel good on the body, perform in the gym, shape and support, and are kind to the planet. I run the day to day international operations, drive the strategy, and (try) to juggle all the moving parts of the business with a smile.
2. Who inspires you?
In general, women that are choosing to chase their dreams instead of a paycheck. Women that come alive when they talk about their “work.” Some well-known people include Oprah and Gwyneth Paltrow, but some not so well known people are Melissa Ambrosini, Melissa Wells, Amy Rushworth, Lauren Armes and Catie Miller. All good friends of mine that inspire me on the daily.
3. Biggest career lesson to date?
People are scared to be a novice. They want to know the path beforehand. They want guaranteed success. These people don’t realize how powerful a lack of knowledge can be.Beginner’s mind can lead to breakthroughs. It’s one of the few states where you can be truly creative. Instead of looking at your lack of experience like an obstacle, think of it as a springboard to a better career, a better understanding of the world, a path to a better you.
4. How did this journey start for you?
Shortly after arriving to the UK, I was introduced to my now good friend and business partner through a mutual contact. The project began as a consultancy relationship, but not too long after conception, we became business partners as the idea of SILOU unfolded.
5. Advice to someone wanting to start their own business?
Really really really want to do it so bad, that you couldn’t live without it. You will miss out on sleep, grow grey hairs and parts of your life will suffer at times – so make sure it’s worth it. Make sure your core goals in life are in alignment with the core goals of the business.
6. Quote you live by?
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
― Howard Thurman
7. Sacrifices you’ve made to get where you are?
On a surface level, I’ve slept a lot less than I would have liked to and spent way too much time sitting at a desk. I’ve also put off having a family as I’ve put all my focus and energy into the business. But on a deeper level, I’ve sacrificed not being close to my family as I choose to stay in the UK to build the business.
8. Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Listen to your gut intuition, it will never let you down.
9. What’s next for you?
Silou becoming a household name like Nike or Adidas. Building a SILOU retreat center – a space for women to come and reconnect with themselves and nature while embracing their SILOU-ettes. I always say you gotta dream big or go home.
