Oleema and Kalani Miller are sisters who have proven together that hard work combined with a clear vision can bring a dream to life, with extraordinary success on an international scale. The sisters embody their brand, living and breathing the MIKOH lifestyle of surf, Summer and body confidence. One of my first clients when I launched The H Collective in Sydney, Oleema and Kalani are life long friends who I have the fortune of finding all over the globe, most recently in Malibu and Paris over Summer. I feel constantly inspired by them and I hope you will too having read this little insight into their world. xHermione.
1. Explain MIKOH in your own words.
Oleema and I founded MIKOH 11 years ago. I think when you were a company owner you become a jack of all trades. Every single day is different and no two days are the same, as far as work. When you were working in fashion, my work days are constantly changing. Some days will be filled with social media, business catch up, working with our PR firm and sales team, and just overseeing it all. Oleema handles all of the design so I fill in whatever else is needed!
2. Who inspires you?
Honestly, my sister Oleema inspires me. It is crazy to think of how much she has accomplished at such a young age. She is still so passionate about work and designing bikinis and is definitely the moving force behind MIKOH. She owns a home, is passionate, and the most loyal person I’ve met.
3. Biggest career lesson to date?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We learned this lesson early on as we have found that there is always going to be someone smarter, faster, or better at some individual task than you are. We have drawn inspiration and lessons from the amazing community around us.
4. How did this journey start for you?
Our love of bikinis started with our home town of San Clemente. Days were spent down on the beach with our family up and down the California coast. This is the basis of everything that we are today.
5. Advice to someone wanting to start their own business?
Make sure that it is something that you’re passionate about. Even after 11 years I still love what I do. They say if you love what you do you will never have to work a day in your life and I truly believe that.
6. Quote you live by?
In every breath is a new opportunity.
7. Sacrifices you’ve made to get where you are?
Being a company owner means that you are ultimately responsible for the health of the company. At times it feels like a lot of extra stress.
8. Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
9. What’s next for you?
You’ll just have to wait and see!
