Circuit Collective co-founders, Alannah and Alexandra, are the ultimate example of the modern day ‘slashie’. With seriously impressive corporate careers otherwise known as ‘day jobs’, the two best friends are building the rapidly growing business as a side hustle in every rare, spare moment in between. Together, they bring their passion for affordable, fun and inspirational fashion to market with a digital retail platform that provides a look for your every ‘Circuit’, from work, to dates, to weddings! We sat down to chat building Circuit Collective.
1. Explain Circuit Collective in your own words.
Offering ready to wear and accessories in a directional, trend led fashion edit, Circuit Collective dresses the City Girl for her every circuit. Whether it be to the office, out for Friday night cocktails or Sunday brunch it is about catering to the needs of the modern women and dressing her for a colourful social calendar. Our seasonal edits combine conventional femininity with a rebellious edge, showcasing versatility and creativity.
We look for brands that are both trend-led and versatile, fall within an affordable price bracket and most importantly, bring something to a woman’s wardrobe that is not typically found on the high street.
In a nutshell, Circuit Collective is the online fashion destination for boutique, trend driven pieces. Delivering an edit of covetable international designers, we curate a versatile collection to take you confidently on your next circuit.
2. Who inspires you?
Without question both of us would agree that our parents are our biggest inspiration and driving force. We both come from extremely hard-working parents with incredible work ethics.
3. Biggest career lesson to date?
We have learnt it is so important to play to people’s strengths and work with experts in fields we aren’t as strong in – when you have an idea, an ambition it is so easy to form tunnel vision and want to do everything yourself as you think no one will be able to do it as well, or no one understands! But that couldn’t be further from the truth, and seriously there just aren’t enough hours in the day! We have met some of the most incredibly talented people on this journey who have helped in nurturing our vision… if you surround yourself with strong, supportive and like-minded people its incredible what you can achieve.
4. How did this journey start for you?
We started Circuit Collective in 2018, after spotting a gap in the market for a one-stop-shop that delivered brands yet to establish a strong UK presence. It actually started over a glass of wine (as all great ideas do) while complaining how sick we were of showing up at parties or to work wearing the same thing as someone else! At the time, Alannah was wearing a stunning top from one of our brands Sister Jane, both affordable and offering something different, and voila this was a light bulb moment for us!
5. Advice to someone wanting to start their own business?
Don’t run before you can walk! When you first start out, its easy to get over excited and want to do everything at once which can be a recipe for disaster as things rarely go as planned the firs time round! Stop, take a breath, take a step back and focus on perfecting the core elements of your business.
6. Quote you live by?
Alex: “trust the process!”
Alannah: “it’s going to be hard, but hard does not mean impossible.”
7. Sacrifices you’ve made to get where you are?
We both work full time (Alex in Finance and Alannah at Christian Dior) alongside running Circuit Collective, so for starters – a life! And sleep… but when you do something you are passionate about, not to mention with your best friend, it’s all worth it in the end.
8. Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
You owe it to yourself to do the things you have always dreamed of.
9. What’s next for you?
There are two key elements we would like to focus on now; first building out our styling solution for the trend led, everyday woman – becoming a voice not only on what to wear but how to wear it.
And secondly, to push for a more sustainable approach for our business. We have started by bringing on more sustainable brands and products, such as Gestuz who uses recycled plastic bottles in their fabrics – I mean who doesn’t love saving the planet all whilst looking fabulous! We have also started using 100% compostable mailers. All small steps in the right direction!
