It started to pour with rain as we drove over the hills and around the lake to Isola Comacina, a restaurant that came highly recommended from so many of you when I asked for Lake Como suggestions. We sprinted to the waiting dock, soaked through by the time we were helped on to the rocking boat. A short journey over to the Island, the restaurant sits atop a perch with breath-taking views straight down the lake. Hardly ideal on a rainy day, the weather didn’t have a chance of dampening our spirits.
Simple food, joyous and loyal staff and a famous menu that hasn’t changed since 1947, Isola Comacina is owned and operated by a lovely husband and wife team who pride themselves on educating their guests and creating an ‘experience’. It’s a dramatic process as they take you through courses, pouring glass after glass of wine and enjoying the crowd quickly relax. A perfectly plump tomato is presented the minute you are seated, cut in two and simply served with a thin slice of lemon and oregano to start the meal, accompanied by a hot baguette, fresh out of the oven. Simple and delicious, it is a recipe I will most definitely replicate.
Rolling through the courses from ham and bresaola to perfectly cooked trout and fried chicken, you hear guests rejoice in sharing who had recommended they visit or how many times they had been before.
After being presented with a big chunk of parmesan straight from the wheel, guests are then invited inside for a fire burning performance with sweet coffee.
