I don’t need to tell you that one of the very best aspects to Britain is its country escapes. Whether you live in London or are visiting from afar, I’ve always championed hopping in the car or onto the train to get lost in the countryside. The tiny winding roads, the country air, rolling hills and the charm of slow moving local villagers pursuing their crafts with passion sets a romantic scene so sweet I could burst! Every new street is akin to turning the page in a Beatrix Potter book. These weekends are the highlights of my love affair with life in the UK and I love exploring and sharing towns that you’ll love, too.
Thus, I introduce: PETWORTH, one of my most favourite country towns in West Sussex. Just an hour by car from central London (Fulham), Petworth is an adorable little town that is thriving thanks to recent developments in the area. Known for its extraordinary antiques and interiors stores, the town is now becoming known as a destination for foodies, too. If you are looking for an escape to eat, drink, relax and explore in style, this is the place for you.
Arriving into town, check in to The Angel Inn (yes, really). Here, you will be taken to your room which will likely be named ‘Sweet Chestnut’ or ‘Walnut’ and if this doesn’t make you feel all warm and fuzzy, I don’t know what will. [Should you be looking to visit with a bigger group, Ryde House is available to rent which is a stand alone ‘home away from home’ with three beautiful, large guest rooms and all the amenities to host, cook and nestle in.]
Now, you’ve dropped your bags and… you’re thirsty! Head downstairs and have your first tipple in the Angel Inn’s bar with the locals… heart-warmingly gorgeous… and the long work week is immediately forgotten! As you drink by the fire, your appetite will inevitably loom so, let’s think: food! Petworth’s food scene has exploded but you need not look further than E.Street Bar & Grill. The menu will meet every craving and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the level of service and luxury offering, world class and as if you’re sitting in one of London’s top restaurants.
As the following days unfold, you’ll constantly find yourself returning to The Hungry Guest which is an upmarket artisanal bakery and food store offering everything your heart could possibly desire from incredible coffee and baked goods to the ingredients for even the most imaginative menu.
A final stop worth noting that you must include on your Petworth itinerary is Augustus Brandt at the beautiful Georgian, Newlands House. Offering coveted collectibles including both antiques and contemporary bespoke furniture pieces, the space also houses incredible art exhibitions by artists such as Mirella Ricciardi, and is well worth a visit. It’s slightly tucked away but make sure you find it, the locals will point you in the right direction.
My greatest joy is sharing hidden gems I find along the way with you that I know you’ll love. Petworth is one such place. I can’t wait to see you follow in my footsteps… I’ll be back there again soon so expect to see it on my insta, too. Lots of Love, xHermione.
