For the second part in my Evening in London series with Mimco, I wanted to explore the alternative way in which I spend my evenings, still dressed from a business day and racing to my final meeting. Together with the brand, we looked at their latest collection and the way a great pair of heels and suitably smart accessories can lift a look. But aside from just dressing the part, I wanted to explore truly being the part. What does it mean to be in business? To work for yourself? Who inspires and drives me to be and do better?
One such person is Lara Worthington. Lara is perhaps well known as my friend but perhaps lesser known as someone who I lean on for support and encouragement, creativity and ideas in business. As a Mum now, she is insanely efficient and productive and often shares time saving ideas with me. I interviewed Lara this week to discuss what drives her as the founder & CEO of The Base and I have shared our interview below. This is the first interview from a series that I have commenced exploring with a group of entrepreneurial women in my life who inspire me. I hope you enjoy not only our Mimco evening look but that there is a learning for you from Lou, too. xHermione.
Listen more than you talk – Lara Worthington.
Lou, how do you start your work day?
If I’m lucky, I get to sleep until 7.30AM but my son usually comes in sometime between 6-7AM. I work from multiple offices, either at home or in a small space in Tribeca. Otherwise, it’s from a hotel when I’m traveling, which is a lot at the moment.
Top tip for productivity in your day to day life?
Write it down!
Advice to young people wanting to go out on their own?
Seek the job would you take if you didn’t need a job.
How do you stay motivated?
Live in the present.
How often do you review your existing and create new goals?
I am a very visual person, I create mood boards for everything in my life. Then I print them out and stick all over the walls.
How did you decide this was the project worth pouring yourself into?
Because it wasn’t about me! My focus has been to offer the modern woman the best life of products to achieve a healthy, safe glow; a look of vitality and well being.
What inspires you?
Different things energise different people. I get so inspired from creating things that people like and that make them feel good. That males me feel great and makes me want to keep building. I’ve met people who are totally motivated by money or press, but for me it’s about making sure people feel good when using the things they are making. That’s what keeps me motivated.
Time off. I have the most clarity on vacation or at home in the shower. I find inspiration in art and journalism. I love contemportay art, magazines and reading the Sunday NY Times front to back.
My family. Motherhood has made me very aware of time, how precious it is and how lucky I am to live with the people I love. It has taught me gratitude on a whole new level. I has taught me patience and it has taught me to see things from other people’s perspectives.
